Through involvement with all aspects of government affairs, the BCANJ works to "raise the standards" in the construction industry, and promote a strong construction economy in New Jersey. A high bar for contractors and construction managers ensures that private owners, public entities, and New Jersey taxpayers benefit from the highest quality facilities at the lowest possible cost.

Some key government affairs victories over the past decade include:

  • Extending the prevailing wage requirement to projects undertaken by private entities on public land

  • Establishing universal prompt payment requirements for construction contracts

  • Ensuring application of public low bidding and prevailing wage on the redevelopment of Fort Monmouth

  • Renewal of the Transportation Trust Fund

  • Standardizing the period prior to bid for public entities to issue addenda

  • Extending the prevailing wage requirement to projects undertaken through certain improvement and development authorities

  • Requiring construction managers on public school facilities projects to be prequalified

  • Setting tougher penalties for prevailing wage violators

  • Creating contractor registration with the New Jersey Department of Labor

  • Authorizing the use of project labor agreements

  • Permitting prejudgement interest on claims in construction

  • Prohibiting "no damage for delay" clauses in some public contracts

  • Originating a State-wide school construction and financing plan

  • Establishing bidding options for more efficient public construction

  • Enhancing the Municipal Mechanic's Lien Law

  • Requiring Treasury-listed sureties for public construction bonds
